Malaysian Contemporary Art: Verbal Art, a new expressive art form introduced in KK
KOTA KINABALU: A group of dynamic artists here calling themselves Cracko Art Group organised a ‘verbal art’ night, in what could be the first of its kind here in Sabah.
Led by one of its members, Harold Egn Eswar, the theme of the Saturday night’s event was ‘Voices From the Asylum’, providing a platform for people from just about any background to express their art verbally.
“Kota Kinabalu has evolved so much in recent years and yet, while the younger generation yearns for a platform where verbal art of any sort could be shared among them, elements of art like this is really lacking,” said Harold.
He added that such a platform can also serve to promote traditional ways of story-telling, as in the past where the older generation used to pass down tales of life verbally.
Having said that, Harold hopes that more people, especially those who are fluent in native languages such as Murut, Dusun, Rungus, Bajau, etc, to come forward and take part in the next session of the group’s verbal art nights.
The event was also held to help fund the group’s newly-established mini gallery and studio, called CAG Aslylum located in Kolombong.
Some 50 people turned up at the CAG Asylum in Kolombong on Saturday night, including six who performed various verbal art expressions, namely Hazli Bjli, Sabrina Aripen, Chris Pereira, Chris Wright, Harjinder Kler and Lily Priggs.

Sabah’s CrackoArtGroup exhibits for the very first time in Penang, showcasing a vibrant variety with different styles and genre of 17 different young and exciting contemporary artists from Sabah, land below the wind.
Sabah’s CAG (CrackoArtGroup) was formed over 2 years ago, comprising artists from various backgrounds, with the same burning passion for art. Since then CAG has been known for the street art at the abandoned land and survey building in the heart of Kota Kinabalu City, which has become a tourist attraction.
CAG has always been active in bringing Sabah’s art movement to the world, especially through empowering the young people in Sabah. The Penang exhibition is part of CAG’s move to showcase the various genre of Sabah’s mixed arts, with generous support for ChinaHouse.
Aptly themed “Circus”, this exhibition portrays Sabah’s very special inclusiveness; at times seen by non-Sabahans to be surreal, voicing out the differences, but at the same time displaying unity in a multi-racial/ethnic and social environment.
In Sabah one can find a Chinese eating in a Malay restaurant, and vice versa, without being frowned upon. Worship places of different religions can be seen being built side to side without any conflict. Such cohesive diversity has projected to outsiders a weird impression of a large community of ‘circus’ inhabitants. So come in, be part of a seemingly motley crew of circus freaks. Set aside your perceptions, put on your merry hats, and share in our great journey of self-discovery, respect and acceptance of the differences around us.
